ABOUT ME

Hi, I am Monica Lis. I am currently a film student at Capilano University. I consider myself a creative person and love using that creativity in film production. I have the motivation to finish what I start, and I love challenges. I have been passionate about making videos since the age of 11. It was not until grade 9 that I knew I wanted to do filmmaking for the rest of my life. One aspect of film that I particularly enjoy is the endless possibilities and the ability to create anything I want. As an artist, I can take a camera and manipulate it to see what I want, and the best part is watching others' reactions when they see my creations. Also, because I can teach lessons, bring out emotions, go into the unknown, express myself, and make my own world. As for right now, if I have a recording device, no one can stop me from filming.

I have achieved some awards when it comes to film, since in high school I participated in film festivals and received the Media Arts Award from grades 9-12. In grade 9, I participated in a film festival called Reel Stars and was awarded Top Junior Film, and Achievement in Junior Cinematography for my short film Looking In. In grade 10, I participated in Reel stars and was awarded Top Junior Drama and Achievements in Special Effects for my short film The Artist. In grade 11, I participated in the film festival named Morvenfest and was awarded with Best Cinematography and Best Screenwriting, along with a $2500 scholarship to Vancouver Film School. In grade 12, I participated in BC Student film festival and was awarded Best Senior Narrative Horror/Thriller/Action for my film Peek a Boo and Best Senior Music Video for my music video Oceans Away.

Another personal achievement for myself was last year's fall, I was hired to film a wedding myself. It is an achievement of mine because firstly it showed me that I was capable enough in my film skills to be hired and trusted to film an incredibly special moment for someone. Secondly, it did not feel like a job at all, I was having fun and enjoyed the process so much I decided to film every event that day. After filming the wedding, I realized filmmaking was the job I want to pursue for my future because it is my passion and hobby. Seeing the reactions of the family members whose wedding I filmed made me love the experience and job even more. I was able to capture this important memory for them and make it beautiful and at the end of the day the smile on the family members' faces is all I need. Therefore, in the future my goals are to one day join the film industry. I want to join the film industry because I want to continue capturing memories, creating stories, and making people feel. Being in film, I am always going to be creative and moving from one story to the next since I am someone who cannot do one thing for an exceptionally long time like sitting in an office for the rest of my life. Personally, I want the thrill of chaos and being spontaneous and the film industry is all of that. These are all the reasons why I want to pursue filmmaking!
